You essentially get 3 different configurations and use cases out of 1 registered lower. The M11A1 is the variant and the most flexible as you essentially get a 'auto pistol' in the original setup but then can add 9mm uppers to convert it to an Mini UZI size config or a M31A upper as you see in this video to make it into a carbine. That said, the MAC can be a very excellent SMG if you're willing to go Class 3 and augment it with a quality after market upper and rate reducer. The MAC by itself in its original guise is a very close range bullet hose, nothing more.
